The Provision (Part 1)

Jesus Christ is fully GOD, thus, He is qualified to be man’s Savior

Bad news: Man is sinful and God is infinitely holy. Thus, the penalty man deserves most is eternal separation from God

Good news: God had graciously provided salvation for sinners. Right after the fall of man, He made a promise to send a Savior (Genesis 3:15). A Savior who will defeat the enemy and rescue man from the penalty, power, and presence of sin. Above all, the Savior came to glorify God (John 12:27-28) by providing reconciliation between man and God (1 Peter 3:18) so that man may glorify and love God for life and eternity in heaven (Deuteronomy 30:6; John 17:24-26; Romans 5:11).

This very important subject, “The Provision,” will be discussed in three lessons. The first two will present the person of the Savior, Jesus Christ. And the third one will focus on the redemptive works of Christ.

In this material, the divinity (Godhood) of Jesus Christ will be highlighted with a strong conviction that NOBODY CAN BE WRONG ON THE GODHOOD OF JESUS CHRIST AND BE RIGHT BEFORE GOD. Let it be that knowing the scriptural bases, personal testimonies, and importance of the divinity of Christ will increase your love for God and love for fellow men.

I. Scriptural Bases Of Christ's Divinity (Godhood)

Jesus Christ is God for He: 1) deserves honor, 2) possesses attributes, 3) owns names, 4) performs deeds, and 5) exercises sovereignty, all of which were divine— equal with God. The acronym H.A.N.D.S. will be used for memory aid.

A. Christ’s Divine Honor

1. Who alone is worthy to be worshipped (Matthew 4:10)?

Matthew 4:10 - 'Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” '

2. What did the disciples do to Christ's expression giving Him the highest honor (Matthew 14:33)?

Matthew 14:33 - 'And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” '

B. Christ’s Divine Attribute

1. Jesus Christ possesses the attributes of goodness and greatness. He is omnipotent (all-powerful; John 1:3), omnipresent (everywhere present; Matthew 18:20), and omniscient (all-knowing; John 2:24-25).

1. Having divine sovereignty means that Christ has absolute control over everything. He rules the whole affairs of the universe (Acts 10:36). Who is Christ according to Revelation 19:16?

Revelation 19:16 - 'On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords. '

II. Personal Testimonies For Christ's Divinity

A. Christ is God According to God the Father

1. How did God the Father call Jesus Christ in Hebrews 1:8?

Hebrews 1:8 - 'But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. '

2. What did God the Father command the angels to do (Hebrews 1:6)?

'Hebrews 1:6 - And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” '

Note: God did not only let the angels worship Christ, He commanded them to worship Christ.

B. Christ is God According to the Wise Men

1. What did the wise men do upon seeing the star and Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 2:11)?

Matthew 2:11 - 'And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. '

C. Christ is God According to the Apostles

1. What did the disciples do after Christ calmed the storm in Matthew 14:33?

'Matthew 14:33 - And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” '

a. Christ accepted the worship of His disciples; He did not rebuke them.

b. Convinced that only God deserves highest honor, what did St. Peter do to Cornelius who bowed before him (Acts 10:25-26)?

Acts 10:25-26 - 'When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am a man.” '

c. Convinced that only God deserves highest honor, what was the response of St. Paul and St. Barnabas to the people who offered sacrifices before them (Acts 14:11-15)?

D. Christ is God According to Demons

1. Demons used to be godly angels in heaven before their rebellion against the Triune God. Thus, they knew who Christ is. They rightly called Him, “Son of God” (Matthew 8:28-29) and “the Holy One” (Mark 1:24).

Matthew 8:28-29 - ' And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way. And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?” '

Mark 1:24 - '“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God.” '

2. When Christ proclaimed that He is “The Son of God,” His hearers understood that Christ was claiming equality with God (John 5:18; 19:7).

John 5:18 - 'This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God. '

John 19:7 - 'The Jews answered him, “We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has made himself the Son of God.” '

E. Christ is God According to Jesus Christ

1. In John 10:30 Jesus Christ said, “I and my Father are ____.”

John 10:30 - 'I and the Father are one.” '

Christ is not only God; He knows that He is God and He proclaimed that He is God.

III. Practical Importance Of Christ's Divinity

A. Importance in relation to Christ’s Role as Savior

1. It is important that the Savior who came on earth is God. Why? It is so because God’s plan is to execute His judgment on the savior, in the place of sinner. However, only someone who is infinite can fully bear and survive the infinite wrath and penalty of an infinite God. Thus, the savior must be God for only God is infinite.

2. Only someone who is truly and fully God could be the one m_______ between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5).

1 Timothy 2:5 'For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, '

B. Importance in relation to Man’s Rejection of the Divinity of Christ

YOU CANNOT BE WRONG ABOUT THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND BE RIGHT BEFORE GOD.

1. When an individual or a religion/church does not abide in the doctrine of Christ, they do not have _______(2 John 1: 9).

2 John 1:9 - 'Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. '

2. When an individual or a religion/church does not accept Christ for who He claims He is, they do not have the love of God (John 5:22-23).

John 5:22-23 - 'For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. '

It is very possible that a person is sincere, yet, sincerely wrong.

YOU CAN BE RIGHT ABOUT THE DIVINITY OF CHRIST AND STILL BE WRONG BEFORE GOD IF YOUR RESPONSE TO HIS DIVINITY IS WRONG.

C. Importance in relation to Man’s Response to the Divinity of Christ

1. Man should believe God and _______ (John 14:1).

John 14:1 ' “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. '

Believing in Christ does not only mean to agree that Christ is God. Demons believe that (Matthew 8:28-29; James 2:19). True faith does not only involve head knowledge about Christ’s deity, but also with heart’s humble and glad surrender to the Lordship of Christ (Romans 10:9).

John 5:23 - 'that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. '
